cannot conect to app store from my mac

I am trying to upgrade from Snow leopard, 10.6.8 to yosemite but cannot conect to the app store to get the link. Can anybody help please ?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Can you open the App Store? Please describe the problem in more detail.

The app will open from the dock but is not active. It just says "cannot connect to the App store" in the pop up window.
