What's a safe DVD ripper to make copy of personal DVD movie and other movies?

We are not allowed to discuss methods of circumventing DRM in these pages.

Try Handbrake. I understand from "....personal DVD movie..." that you are not attempting to copy copyright protected stuff.

I also use 'Toast 10 Pro' from Roxio and I find it excellent. Toast isn't free though.

Toast is a much better choice if you want to make a duplicate of your private DVD video. A ripper will have to encode a new compressed video of a video that is already compressed to copy it. Then you have to make a new DVD from that, which will recompress it yet again in the process. So that's two more steps of making the video quality worse. With Toast, you just choose the duplicate tab and it makes a perfect copy.

Much cheaper to get Toast from Amazon than directly from Roxio/Corel.

Handbrake is a great converter but cannot work with protected disc. Also it cannot burn blank disc.

If your DVD is a commercial one, try MakeMKV or Free DVDAid. The former can output a no-quality-loss mkv (but cannot shrink into smaller size), the later can help with both decryption and transcoding. So this is the first step.

Toast is recommended to do the burning.

The easiest way is to use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the DVD; you can then burn that to a blank DVD (and indeed play it using the DVD player).

Insert your DVD. Open Disk Utility and select it in the sidebar (the disk itself, not the drive it's in.) Click 'New Image' in the toolbar.

In the dialog box which opens set 'Image Format' to 'DVD/CD Master' and 'Encryption' to 'none'. This will make an exact copy without re-compressing.

Obviously this will not work on a commercially issued DVD, only on ones you make yourself or which are not DRM protected.
