I changed my sim card and now my contact names are gone in iMessage?

So i just unlocked my iPhone and switched the sim card from ATT to another carrier (optus) and wanted to change numbers just because this is a temporary switch.

Now when i go to messages my contacts all appear as phone numbers instead of their names. I still have them in my phone if i go look at the contact/address book but they don't appear in messages.

I want to switch it to names not numbers.

(I still have the original sim and have it backed up to my computer if that helps)

iPhone 5, iOS 8.1.3

I have the same problem, having temporarily relocated to another country, but don't think that It's a backup issue, as everything (including conversations) are intact. However, when changing my contacts sync account to Gmail last night, most of my contact names came back.. but disappeared again this morning.. maybe there's a hint here?

The SIM is not involved. The iPhone does not save contacts to the SIM. Most likely when you restored the phone as a step in unlocking the phone you did not restore your most recent backup.
