MacBook Pro Slower ever since Yosemite installed.

Hi everyone,

Ever since I installed Yosemite, my MBP has slowed down. iTunes and other applications takes forever to open and webpages load super slow. I am about to take it the the Apple store, but I thought I'd check here and see if I can get some help to find a solution.

Thanks for the help in advance,

JCP

Well, the first and more obvious item would be to upgrade the RAM as that

is an easy answer; it is something you could buy from a reputable reseller

and install yourself. The actual total your computer can use is 16GB and it

is upgradable across two slots. See instructions on how to access them:

•MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support

According to http://mactracker.ca database information, RAM upgrade is:

Maximum Memory 16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)

Memory Slots 2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

A fair and reputable source for tested upgrade memory RAM & other parts

for Apple products: OWC macsales. Quality parts, support, cost; are good.

•upgrade memory RAM - macbook pro 2011 models:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM

Depending on the type, size and spin rate of the internal hard disk drive,

that too may be subject to upgrade consideration; a solid-state drive may

be something to think about. But read since not all are equal and you'd

have to be certain a process was followed correctly to install & use it...

Also, hard disk drives do wear out, so a failing HDD could be noticed in

a change of performance. Since Yosemite likes more RAM, especially

if or when you are running top-heavy applications, that is a first bet.

The OWC site has some HDD/SSDs too; and instruction video links.

There may be some issues or conflicts in software; maybe some old stuff

that has been kept in the computer from earlier OS X versions; perhaps

a look into the Activity Monitor and also Console to see what actions and

when periods of slowness occur, note the time/date & look into Logs.

Hopefully you can upgrade the RAM with correct spec quality parts

& have it work well enough, at least for a time. Then check the HDD.

If the computer has a 5400-RPM HDD, then a 7200-RPM may do, or

perhaps a quality SSD from OWC could be a boost.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). My daughter was having a similar issue. I originally thought it was the spotlight rebuilding the indexes but everything was unusable. After some research I tried resetting the SMC and everything was back to normal. Here's a link for how to do that:
