why are websites coming up as text?
A few days ago some websites started coming up as just text but yet others are coming up just fine. How do I fix this?

Can you give an example of a website that is behaving this way?
IMDB for one.
IMDB is OK here. Are you using FireFox? If so is it an up to date version? - and does the same thing happen in Safari?
When you say 'text' do you mean that it's showing the HTML coding of the page or is it just the usual text component but without the images? If the latter, do the images appear as empty spaces or not at all?
I just downloaded firefox and everything is coming up fine so I guess it has something to do with safari. It will come up with the text of the site in like a list form on the left side of the page but no images. I'll just use firefox for now and try reinstalling safari. Hopefully that will re-boot it.

That means it is reading the page but not the (often external) 'CSS' style sheet which contains the layout information.
If you don't have the 'Developer' menu in your Safari menus, go to Preferences>Advanced and check 'Show Develop menu in menu bar). Also set 'Style sheet' to 'None Selected'.
In the Developer menu, make sure that 'Disable styles' is not ticked.
