Q: my macbook pro won't start up. it's plugged in, the orange light indicator is on, and the computer isn't responding to anything.

I was updating the software on my macbook pro, it restarted. when it finished loading there was an error message of DMSlaunch.exe not responding. the computer shut down on its own and now i can't get it to start back up. any suggestions?

Try these steps:

Reset the SMC and NVRAM:

Then try a safe boot:

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

It often is helpful if you indicate the EXACT model MBP that you have and the installed OSX.

No it will have NO affect on your data. With that said, you should have backups as a matter of procedure if you value your data. Preferably two independent ones.
