Q: I have borrowed an iPad. I would like to use my  own Applemy id?

Can I do as above ? Use my id on someone else iPad with losing the data already on it?  iOS 5.1.1  if I download an app it shows up on the other devices. His other devices send messages to this iPad i would like to use it for my own messages without having them broadcast everywhere

It is never a good idea to do what you want to do. If you sign into your ID on his iPad and download even one of your own past purchases, you will lock your friend out of his ID for 90 days.

It is one thing to borrow the device to play a few games, watch videos, surf the web or even read your email using the Safari web browser, but switching ID's the way that you want to do it is not recommended.

what do people do if they buy a used one? Is that how Apple keeps refreshing products by making them so they have to be thrown away every time a new one comes along?  I could never give my old one to my kids or brother or anyone I would have to throw it away?

Nobody said anything about not being able to erase the device and use another Apple ID on it, if you sell if or give it away. Nobody expects people to throw away perfectly iOS good devices. This is NOT what you asked anyway. You asked if you borrow an iPad, can you switch  Apple ID's. What exactly do you want to do? Borrow the iPad, or buy it?

When you sell an iPad, it must be erased first. The you can use your own Apple ID on it.

My wife and I both have iCloud email accounts.  I had been planning to use my iPad to access her email while we're on vacation.  Will that same 90-day lockout occur?

I don't think that would apply in your situation since you will just be checking email on the iPad using your own iCloud accounts. This lockout has to do with downloading past purchases.

To the best of my knowledge, the 90 day lockout occurs only when you switch Apple ID's and then download a past purchase with the ID that you just signed into. When you download a past purchase with a different ID, that associates the device with that ID. The same also occurs the first time that you download a past purchase on your own new device using your own ID.

Apple implemented this feature so that a user cannot allow other users to download their purchases for free by switching ID's, without someone paying the price for that, and the price being that you will be locked out of your ID for 90 days.

You may have read this before, but if not, take a look at this.

Not if you just add the email account (In Mail Contacts Calendars)

It appears that you're correct and Csound confirmed it.  Thanks to both of you.

Followup question.  I just looked at the Mail, Contacts, Calendars settings and it appears that both email accounts can be simultaneously resident.  However, to keep things simple while we're on vacation, I'd have to go into my iCloud account settings and disable my email while she's checking her messages.  Similarly, hers would be disabled while I'm checking my messages.  In fact, her account would have everything except email and contacts turned off permanently.

On second thought, perhaps I'll turn on bookmarks for her (and turn mine off) when she's using the iPad.  We'll go nuts if bookmarks for both are turned on.
