how do i retrieve photos from icloud backups

I have numerous older backups saved on my pc with both itunes & icloud, but I can't figure out how to retrieve the photos that were included in these backups. I have tried googling it, & a bunch of 3rd party companies offer a "free iphone back up extractor", but then after installing them, they want a substantial fee for the service. I've never been a fan of giving my apple id login info to random websites, & they require that as well. How can i extract just the photos & videos from these backups & save them on my pc? I'm not interested in any of the other info they include.

iPhone 5, iOS 8.1.3

Here are the steps to recover iPhone photos from iCloud backup:

1 Go to https://www.icloud.com/ & sign in to your account. If you don't have an account, then create one.

2 If your photos are from Photo Stream, then you can not recover them from iCloud.

3 If your photos come from Camera Roll, then you can recover them from iCloud Backup.

4 If you want to recover photos from iCloud Backup, go to "Settings" on your iPhone.

5 Click "General" icon located in the list.

6 Tap "Reset" to change into another page.

7 Tap "Erase All Content and Settings" option.

8 You will see the setup screen and your iPhone will reset itself.

9 You will see 3 options i.e. "Set Up as New iPhone", "Restore from iCloud Backup" and "Restore from iTunes Backup".

10 Tap "Restore from iCloud Backup" option.

11 Enter your Apple ID to sign in to iCloud account.

12 Select "Choose Backup" and pick from a list of available backups in iCloud.

13 Tap "Restore" button.

I only restored my backup from iCloud and then I spotted the most annoying glitch by the photos not being able to be retrived from iCloud and it was all gray. I went to camera roll, and everything was gray. I decided it to load all night, and woke up to check its status. It was still gray, so then I restarted my celluar device and went to Photos again and I had the same problem again. So I hit one of the grey pictures, and let it hold there for a few minutes and it automatically started to stream my photos back so I continued doing the same thing and it finallyretrieve photos from iCloud. Hope it helps some of you.

iTunes and iClouds backups are designed only for use in doing a complete restore of an iOS device. There isn't a way to retrieve data from a backup done via iTunes without using 3rd party software. A legitimate one is http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/ibackupextractor/ but it does cost $25.

I have seen others that claim to be able to extract from an iCloud backup but don't know if any are legitimate.
