Q: ARD 3.8/3.8.2 "No User Name and Pasword"

I'm supporting my handicapped brother at a distance with ARD. I am unable to take over his machine. This was working before. When I take it over, he first initiates a VPN link to my LAN (router based VPN), then he shows up in ARD and I can take over the machine. This has worked until now.

Changes:

- I've replaced my router. The VPN works, I can see his machine being available. I just can't take it over. It seems ARD client and server software between the two do not work. I've looked in the router's log and see nothing dropped or blocked (besides, this is all 'LAN' traffic). Is there anything the router could have changed?

- ARD has been updated on both sides (or at least ARD says his machine has 3.8.2, my ARD is 3.8). This seems a more likely culprit.

What can I do to debug this problem? And the other side is hundreds of km away and has zero understanding of computers.

Additional info. He has two Mac, a MBP and an iMac, both running 10.8. I can control the MBP, but  not the iMac. As far as I know, both systems are identical (apparently not) and I used to be able to control both before.

Is there a way I can somehow reset ARD on the iMac's side?

I've found a very slow workaround, btw. I've turned on VNC viewing in System Preferences on the iMac and now I can control the MBP from my machine and the iMac from the MBP. Not a very nice solution, but at least I can now access the iMac and look what is wrong

"Is there a way I can somehow reset ARD in the iMac's side?"

Apple Remote Desktop: Configuring remotely via command line (kickstart) - Apple Support

A good way I've found of using the kickstart command is to enable sush first (SSH). That way you can remotely connect using Terminal and then reset the remote client using kickstart. Works every time for me. If you're able to use VNC viewing simply enable Remote Login (uses port 22) in the Sharing Preferences Pane. Seeing as you're using VPN you can safely do this if you wish?

Once you've got ARD going again you can turn off SSH by sending a UNIX command via ARD:

    systemsetup -setremotelogin off

    To turn it on again:

    systemsetup -setremotelogin on

    To reset ARD using kickstart:

/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all

All the commands I've listed must be sent as root.

    Hopefully the above should help?

The answer was simpler. It turned out that I only had to remove and re-add his computer in ARD on my system. Somehow, the ARD data on my system was corrupted. After I removed his computer and added it I could enter the credentials and it worked.

(Before I found that out, I was able to connect to his laptop, I let him enable VNC on the desktop and then used ARD to his laptop and VNC from hist laptop to his desktop (screen share within screen share). It was very unresponsive, but it did work. When ARD worked again on both systems, I could turn off VNC).
