bluetooth bad range

i recently purchased a bluetooth speaker and realized that the bluetooth range on my macbook is incredibly bad.

the macbook have a hard time maintaining a good connection in an empty room unless it is within 1 meter of the device.

(i have tried resetting the device, reconnecting etc.)

this is not normal i am assuming?
