Q: Resource issue in Yosemite

I am running VMware on an 8GB 2.6GHz Mac Mini. I have two 1GB WindowsXP VMs. If I run nothing else but these two VMs after booting, in short order my "Memory Used" equals 8GB. If I now try to start a third VM 1GB VM, VMware reports "insufficient memory." However, if I reboot and start all three VMs right away, they run. However, in all cases eventually (after 30 min or so) my Mac gets very slow, despite the CPU usage being less than 15%, and the CPU for each VM only 2-3%.

I also get "insufficient memory" errors when running other applications simultaneously, like iPhoto alongside MS Word and MS PowerPoint.

I never had this problem with 10.8 (I've never run 10.9, Mavericks).

With Mavericks, Apple introduced new RAM management that may not be compatible with what you are trying to do. That is my guess.

It is an effort to use as much RAM as possible in order to create a more efficient and faster OSX. If possible, installation of additional RAM may mitigate the problem.
