Q: Finder does not start or allow relaunch

I've have not been able to start Finder (or Spotlight) since a recent restart. What I have tried so far:

  • Killed and relaunched from Activity Monitor as well as Terminal
  • Disabled dropbox finder extension.
  • Log in as different user (Works fine)
  • Repaired Disk and Permissions (No change)
  • Restarted in safe mode (Still does not work)
  • Restarted in recovery mode and attempted re-install OSX, this ends up hanging each time (left it for 12 hours last time and it never completed)
  • I have also moved the finder (and other related files) .plist to force it to recreate but it never gets that far. (New files are not created and Finder just hangs).

Any suggestions on what I should do next?

This is what I have:

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011)

2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5

20 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

OSX Yosemite 10.10.2

If you have a backup, "Erase and Reinstall OS X".

Thanks, I realize this will be my last resort option. Looking for something less extreme, perhaps a way to just reinstall Finder cleanly? Everything works fine for other user accounts so hoping to avoid a complete erase and reinstall.

After you deleted the .plists, did you restart?

Yes, I have restarted after each step including deleting the .plists.

    Applications
Feb 22, 2015 6:41 PM in response to sshahnyc

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    Step 1

For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Step 2

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION User Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

In the General pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked

Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices

    Back up all data.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:

    /var/db/CoreDuet

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

A folder named "CoreDuet" may open, containing one or more files with names beginning in "coreduetd." Move those files to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and test.

I did not have this option in the General pane of my System Preferences:

Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices

As my finder continues to hang, I was unable to follow your instructions exactly. I used terminal to execute the following:

    sudo -u root rm /var/db/CoreDuet/coreduetd*

I then restarted and am still having the same issue. I do not see the coreduet crash reports every few minutes as I did previously. Here is the log for Finder after I again force quit it:

Please sign out of iCloud in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. No data will be removed from the servers, and you can retrieve it by signing back in. That said, you should always have a current archive of the data for safety's sake, even if you don't sign out.

If you use iCloud Keychain, when you sign back in to iCloud follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set it up on an additional device.

I was not able to sign out of iCloud. The preferences pane hangs when I try to do that. I went to the apple site and changed my password and rebooted. While it asks for a password (and I don't enter one) but it still does not allow me to logout. Whenever I try, in the Activity Monitor, the finder (when previously killed) starts and becomes unresponsive. Here is the console log for finder after killing it again. I also see the startup is a lot slower than normal when I reboot.

Back up all data before proceeding.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.

    Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.

Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

    Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

              Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

    resetp

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

    resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

    Select

               Restart

    from the menu bar.

Try disconnecting from the network by turning off Wi-Fi or unplugging the Ethernet cable, whichever is applicable. Then see whether you can sign out of iCloud. If you can't, this is going to get ugly. What backups do you have?

Unfortunately that did not work either. I am able to create a new account and finder works fine there and in other existing accounts. Is a full restore or new account/copy manually my only options at this point? Appreciate all the assistance so far.

I do use crashplan and have a full backup as well.
