Q: DVDSP - Quality of DVD menus after burnt. . .

Hello again

I was hoping someone can help me. I burn DVDs in DVDSP, and the video quality when watching it backs is fine. It's the DVD menu, I use a template from DVDSP and use the dropzones to put high quality JPEG pictures in but they go low quality. I've attached a picture to show you what I mean, the worst looking one is the image on top of 'button five'. The lines aren't straight but the pictures are good quality. How can I improve the picture quality in my DVD menus?

Many thanks

DVD Video discs are standard definition - 720x480 pixels for NTSC and 720x576 in PAL.

Your high quality images are being converted and compressed to fit that limitation. This is done by throwing information away.

It is particularly noticable on thin lines and small, delicate typefaces. The only thing you can do, is avoid using such elements.

Usually he best way is to make all the assets outside of DVD SP in Motion, After Effects, etc, the assets sometimes undergo additional encoding when using DVD SP to create items, such as in motion menus by dragging into drop zones.  Also note that JPGs are compressed (compared to TIFs, etc.)

Check out the manual DVD SP 4 (Pg 230 of the PDF) for certain instances (not all) where menus willl have to be compiled/rendered.

You may try to export your menu assets (pictures) onto video and convert to mpeg-2 in compressor.
