phone is saying its linked to a different email address to activate phone

im having trouble activating my phone as its saying my apple id is linked to a different email address, however when i type that email address in and try to reset the password it will not let me do so leaving me without being able to access my phone. ive just updated it to the ios 8.1.3 and it said i need to restore my phone and now i cant get back into it
