Back in 2012, when I bought my iPad, I set up a 9 character Apple ID.
A couple of months ago, I got my wife an iPad Air, and tried to set a up a similar (but different) 9 character ID for her account,
but it kept rejecting it, wanting 10 character or longer.
How do I use the 9 character ID?
Yes, there are numbers, upper and lower case.

Is it really the length that is being objected to?
You need a valid email address as your Apple ID.
Email address is not the issue.
The password length is. I'd like to use 9 characters. (only)
Oh, your original question referred to a "9 character ID".
Anyway, for the password, again it is not the length of the password that's the issue. It's the strength. Apple now requires a strong password.
