Aperture: pop up menus in Places view do not work

I'm using Aperture 3.6 on a new iMac.

In Places view, there are supposed to be drop-down menus for States/Provinces, Cities, Places, as shown in the Aperture 3 User Manual

These menus do not drop down for me.

What is going on?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
