When will Apple make Safari work properly?

Does anybody know when Apple will get its very own built-in browser to work properly?

Since 'upgrading' to Yosemite when it was released, Safari has been horrendous, locking up multiple times a day.

Here's the latest...

User uploaded file

I have of course allowed my Mac to report each and every lock-up, so Apple knows about them.

If anybody is able to understand the text below, does it give any hint of what I can do to make Safari work as it should?

All my software is from the App Store and all software is fully up to date.

At this point Firefox is looking good...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for the reply, I've now had time to run EtreCheck, which I've copied below.

Just a couple of notes - I've recently turned back on my two Safari extensions after leaving them off for a while to see if they made any difference. They don't appear to.

I've just had Mail Web Content hang as well as Safari (see below) - when I forced Safari to quit, Mail started working fine, so maybe a conflict there?

User uploaded file

Anyhow, here is the EtreCheck result - even I can see some processes running which don't need to (Matrox and others) so I'll endeavour to clean those up...

Thanks again,

Ian

Safari works just fine for nearly all of us.

You have gobs of third party junk on your machine and its your problem:

Review all top sites and delete the ones you don't want in top sites.

It has been a problem even in snow leopard last safari update that top sites were refreshed when you opened safari. Had problems with safari slowing or getting stuck last year - discovered that top sites was populating itself - including multiple RSS feeds even though I had removed them from RSS feeds. Deleting them all and clearing Cache/web data/cookies then solved the mystery of where some cookies were coming from. Keeping top sites clean sped up safari - also using a blank home page and just going into sites through bookmarks.

I did send feedback to Apple on the issue of sites freezing and Safari freezing the system - crash reports if I received them - but had to solve the issue myself - above.

Now running Opera as my web browser.

Feb 27, 2015 7:34 AM in response to Jagmurcredrea

Personally if my bank recommended the installation of Trusteer, I would consider that grounds to change banks rather then install that crap on my Mac. It certainly shows their total lack of knowledge on the subject of security.

It is known to cause problems on Macs. I recommend that you uninstall it.

It also appears that you are having problems with CrashPlan because it is eating up a huge amount of RAM

Feb 27, 2015 7:53 AM in response to Jagmurcredrea

You must uninstall Trusteer Rapport. Your Mac cannot function properly with it installed and merely disabling it will not suffice.

If your bank requires Trusteer Rapport they obviously don't want your business, but their ineptitude means they shouldn't be trusted with your money anyway. Fortunately, at present there are still a number of other banks that understand computer security. Choose a competent one. Yours is not.

Sophos is just as useless. I recommend you become more knowledgeable about Internet security.

.. as for CleanMyMac I don't know a better way of clearing out the cr*p!

If you actually used CleanMyMac to do anything in particular, you might need to erase your Mac completely and rebuild it from the ground up to recover from the damage it is capable of inflicting. If you need specific instructions, ask.

"CleanMyDrive" is another suspicious app. Macs don't need "cleaning".

You need to become much more circumspect regarding the software you choose to install. I apologize if that comes across as blunt, but you appear to have been exerting quite some effort in an attempt to prevent your Mac from working the way it's supposed to work.

That report implies an unsupported Time Machine configuration. If the network destination is not a genuine Apple AirPort Time Capsule or OS X Server on your network, it should not be considered reliable. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

Thanks, it seems top sites has to have a minimum of 6 shown, but I've deleted dozens and Safari is definitely running quicker. Thanks again!

I wonder if the 6 is a yosemite bug - I removed all of them in Snow Leopard. If it won't let you remove them you may want to report it.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

I backed into the problem with Safari - by having issues with slow mail -- mail uses the PubSub folder in your user library to keep track of RSS downloads - cleared the folder - open mail stayed clear - opened Safari and there were RSS data in the folders - 😕 Then tracked it down to the Safari top sites --

so if in Yosemite you can't disable top-sites - or stop auto add you should also report it as a bug.
