A friend's email account was hacked but unfortunately I opened it before she could warn everyone. How can I tell if I have now exposed my ipad to a virus or some other malware?

If you have not jailbroken your iPad, you do not have a virus.
Sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly does jailbroken mean?
It means that the built-in protection of iOS have been disabled. It you don't know what this means your iPad has probably not been jailbroken.
