MacBook Air keyboard not functioning

I have a new MacBook Air from last August, sometimes when I turn the laptop on the keyboard will not function correctly and when depressing the keys nothing happens. I have to use an external keyboard to type in my password. Also when using the trackpad and I click on a link or a box to enter information only a drop down menu appears. Any suggestions of what is wrong or how to correct would be appreciated.
