On 11in Macbook Air (10.10), how do I increase resolution of built-in display to 2560 by 1600 pixels?
It can be accomplished when an external display is connected, so I expect it can be done without an external display.

thanks for trying jadonren29, but i missed one key piece of information in the description. When I hook up the external monitor, the built-in display goes to 2560 x 1600 to mirror the external display, so I know it's capable of displaying the higher resolution.
No, it is the other way round. While in mirrored display mode, the external monitor adjusts to match the parameters of the built in display.
I can say with 100% certainty that when I hook up my non-retina 11in macbook air to my HDTV, both the TV and the Macbook display 2560x1600.

Don't have the model # on hand but it's a 1 year old 50in Samsung
You're getting full native resolution 1366 x 768 on your internal display, nothing more.

The Macbook's video card is supplying 2560 x 1600 to the TV but is scaling it back to 1366 x 768 on its display (whatever it may be telling you) - the limit is the actual physical pixels in the display, and there is no way of displaying above that.
Thanks everybody. I may have been asking the question incorrectly. I understand the resolution is limited by the pixels in the macbook screen. But when I hook up to my external display, the built-in display shrinks everything down to mirror what's showing on the (2560x1600) external display. This appears to be 2560x1600 resolution on the built in screen, but I guess it's not really. I'm just wonder if you can force the macbook to shrink everything down without hooking up to an external display.

My MacBook Air does the same. The resolution on the laptop screen goes to 1920x1080 when connected to an external device, or even when mirroring to AirServer software. I was wondering if you found a way to do that without using anything but the laptop itself.
