Are you asking if a Bootcamp/WIndows installation can also be booted as a Virtual Machine? The answer is yes.
I'd like to pick up on the question that I think was answered by Loner but without a "this is how it's done.". I have Windows 7 installed on my Mac through Bootcamp and also have installed VMware Fusion. I would like to run VMware using the existing installation of Windows. However, VMware after starting up cannot find Windows. Is it possible I can use this installation of Windows with VMware or do I have to partition my disk and do a separate install for VMware?
No. You do not need to install another copy of Windows.
1. Please ensure the BC installation of Windows is activated.

3. You may need to re-activate Windows, but do not need a new license for W7. W10 causes much more heartburn, but you are in better place.

Are you trying to download the linked PDF? You do not need to. This is also available in VMware help, if it is already installed.
The file I'm down loading is "Boot Camp.vmdk." Becuase I was concerned I went back and restarted baout an hour and 20 minutes ago. It is still slow and about 40% done.
Do you have two Windows 7 instances, one is a Bootcamp/Windows and the other is a VMware VM-only Windows (which has a virtual disk named BootCamp.vmdk)?
OK, that may be the problem. A couple years ago I ran on Parallels, then switched to VMware. I had some disk problems caused by my installing Yosemite before it was ready. I use three monitors and Yosemite would not allow use like in Lion. In the process going back to Lion I clobbered the disk that had the VMware/bootcamp files. When I upgraded to Mountain Lion which is what I am now running on, I could not access Windows through VMware. So, I reinstalled Bootcamp and I am running Windows in native mode. Works great, but now I need to access some Mac applications as I am running Windows and thought I would try to get the VMware/Windows system running again.
I have three disks on my system two are formatted for the Mac, and the third is NTFS (500 GB). It appears this is turning out to be a bigger problem than an old retired Comp. Sc Prof can handle-lol. I will appreciate your help if that is possible.

From OSX Terminal, post the output of diskutil list. This will provide the list of partitions that currently exist on disk that the Mac can see.
In VMWare Fusion -> Virtual Machine Library, select your VM, click on Settings -> Hard Disk and you should see a window similar to the following. This is a standalone virtual machine, which is not connected to Bootcamp at all.
If you notice the highlighted parts, you can see which is a standalone VM (it is the first one) and which is a BC-derived VM (it is the second one).
These screen shots are from an older version of VMware, but newer versions should be similar.
If you have multiple disks, do you have a MacPro? What year/model is your MacPro? If you want to post similar images (using Grab) it may make it a bit quicker to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Unfortunately I had some time back (from VMware) deleted all virtual machines but Boot Camp, so when I check the HD for that I see what you show (Boot Camp.vmdk).

Can you post the output of the following Treminal commands?
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.
