My bluetooth is showing as "unavailable" and the icon has disappeared from my system preferences, so I cannot make changes, yet my keyboard and mouse are working (although the mouse is not scrolling as usual.)

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
The Apple Icon in the upper left will show "About this Mac", click it
Then click on "System Report"
Look at the "Bluetooth" heading
You can then see if the system is recognizing the bluetooth and its status.
You could try doing a "SMC Reset"

Thank you for your reply. When I click on "System Report" it says "No information found" under Bluetooth - that is my problem. I see that resetting the SMC is a last resort, so I hope to seek other possible fixes first.

There is no harm doing a SMC reset. If it doesn't help at least you tried.
