Feb 24, 2015 3:14 PM in response to Paul Seymour1by Paul Seymour1,I spoke to Apple Tech Support. We determined that the problem doesn't affect the speaker phone or use of the earbuds. The problem is only when I'm talking on the phone normally.
Apparently I need to replace the phone. However, that entails such a huge time investment — both at the store and then a few hours at home configuring everything — that I'll probably just use the earbuds until I can take a half day off work to sort this out.
I've been using Apple gear since the mid-80s, and see the company in very rapid decline quality-wise. This is the 3rd lemon I've seen come out of Apple in the last 6 months where it had to be returned and replaced with another one. This also happened with 2 MacBookPros. Previously, I've never seen this kind of thing happen before.
