Can I update my iphone 3gs 4.2.1 to the 4.3 software?

Question

I have an old Iphone 3gs that is ios 4.2.1. that I want to let my ten year old daughter use with texting apps. I can&#x27;t seem to find any messaging apps that will download to the 4.2.1 version. I have found a few that is compatible with 4.3, but I can&#x27;t seem to figure out how to update this old thing to 4.3. I updated my iTunes version to the newest for Windows and I can&#x27;t find my device when I plug in the old phone. My account comes up, but my device isn&#x27;t listed anywhere in any menu. I have been at this ALL DAY!!! Any suggestions? Are there any messaging apps that will work for 4.2? Is there a way to upgrade it? Has anyone used the Whited00r jailbreak to update? I am completely out of search keywords!! haha

If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher.
