why can't i reinstall snow leopard on my macbook pro with a nnew hdd

It's a MacBook Pro 4.1 I bought used a few years ago. It's been working fine, I just wanted to put a larger hdd in it. I have original install dvds for 10.6 (3 sets of them in fact.) 10.6 is what it came with preloaded. I was apparently successful installing the new hdd and was able to format it using disk utility on the install DVD. No matter what I do it refuses to let me install 10.6 on my new hdd. "You can't install OS X on this computer".

I can put the original HDD in an external USB enclosure and boot to it. It sees the new hdd, then I run the install from the DVD and still no go.

What's the trick?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
