My laptop was stolen from my office yesterday. The laptop is really important to me since my research is there and it's my life right now. How can I track my macbook air by the serial number?
I have read that to be able to trace a lost macbook, we can use Find My Mac app. But, I haven't install that app in my macbook.
Is there any other way to get this stolen laptop again?

You can't track your Mac with the serial number.
If you didn't implement Find My Mac prior to it be stolen there is nothing that can be done about that now.
You only alternative now is to look for it the old fashion way.
If this research was so important to you, why wasn't it backed up?
If you checked off System Preferences -> iCloud -> Find My Mac, it could be possible that you can see the location of your Mac while the guy who stole your MacBook using it.
