Feb 26, 2015 6:34 AM in response to gustavolimaxby Matt_M.,Hello gustavolimax,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. When you open iTunes on your computer, are you signing into the iTunes store to initiate the conversion process? If not, let’s definitely do so:
Using an existing Apple ID with the iTunes Store, Mac App Store, and iBooks Store - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201762
Use your Apple ID with the iTunes Store
- Open the latest version of iTunes.
- Choose Store > Sign In.
- Enter your Apple ID and password and click Sign In.
Additional information:
Convert your AOL Username to an Apple ID - Apple Support

Cheers,
Matt M.

Feb 27, 2015 11:54 AM in response to turingtest2by scottfromwimbledon,I have the same issue - iTunes 12.0.1 (latest version), on Mac Yosemite 10.10.2 (latest version), I sign out of iTunes and I sign in with my AOL ID and no on-screen messages to convert to an Apple ID (and if I do ever get those messages - can I convert to an Apple ID which already exists - the email suggests that a new Apple ID needs to be created?). Thanks for any help.

Feb 27, 2015 12:17 PM in response to gustavolimaxby turingtest2,I would assume that the process only applies if you have used an AOL Screen Name, without a trailing @aol.com part, as your AppleID. If you happen to be an AOL user but your AppleID is something like <user>@aol.com then you shouldn't need to make any changes.

Feb 27, 2015 12:19 PM in response to gustavolimaxby gail from maine,Is the Apple ID your actual AOL User Name, or is it an AOL email address? If you are using any valid email address (AOL or otherwise), then the requirement to change does not apply to you. It only applies to people who are still using their AOL User Name as their Apple ID.
Cheers,
GB

Feb 28, 2015 1:22 AM in response to gail from maineby scottfromwimbledon,Thanks gail
I was trying with a username@aol.co.uk which sounds like there's no change needed - but that I would have needed a change if it was just 'username' within AOL. I think the Apple email that I received and the support page would benefit from being a bit clearer on the distinction that you've called out - thanks again.

Feb 28, 2015 6:05 AM in response to gustavolimaxby gustavolimax,Problem solved, the changes occur only if you are using AOL as Apple User ID. But if you are using an email from AOL does not need any change.
Thanks to studies of very heart. I love you. ♥

Mar 3, 2015 11:03 AM in response to gustavolimaxby Truculent Punk,so how does it work if you have one itunes account using the aol screename and a second itunes account using the apple id of the username@aol.com? Can I merge the two into the apple id account now the aol screename is being phased out?
-
Mar 3, 2015 12:21 PM in response to Truculent Punkby turingtest2,In general AppleIDs cannot be merged, so my guess is that you will need to get a new address to use with the old screen name AppleID. It may become clear when you sign out and try to sign in again to initiate the conversion process.

Mar 4, 2015 6:45 AM in response to Truculent Punkby gail from maine,They cannot be merged, but the result will be the same situation that you have today. They are currently two different Apple IDs, they will continue to be two different Apple IDs. The only thing that is changing is the AOL User Name Apple ID becomes an email address (unique from the aol.com email address).
Cheers,
GB
