Q: Why can't I connect using cellular data while on a phone call

When I make or receive a phone call, I cannot use any data while on the call. Is there any way I can fix this?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1.3

It depends on who your carrier is. Some carriers cannot support a cellular call and cellular data at the same time.

It all depends on your cellular carrier:

As the article points out, CDMA networks (such as Verizon, Sprint, U.S. Cellular in the U.S.) do not support simultaneous voice and cellular data on an iPhone.

Not sure of your reading level, but he said, "do not support simultaneous voice and cellular data on an iPhone." So how is he incorrect, that would match your findings?

sberman1 is exactly correct. The chip that Apple chose to use in the 5S does not support simultaneous CDMA voice and LTE data. The more recent Samsung models (you don't mention which one your wife has but I'll assume it's an S5) do.

The iPhone 6/6+ will do voice over LTE which allows them, in a 4G area, to do simultaneous voice and data.

Calm down now guys. I stand corrected.

When Sberman wrote, "verizon didnt support simultaneous voice and cellular date". Thats where I stopped reading. I didnt see that part where he said ,"on an iPhone".

However, I have the iPhone 6 Plus and I still cannot use the web browser while in a phone call.

You may be in an area that does not support it yet.

The ability to do so requires that the network where you are supports VoLTE. If it does, and your account is properly provisioned, and the option for voice over LTE is enabled on your phone, then you should be able to get simultaneous voice and data. If any one of those three things is not true, you won't. Without VoLTE, voice calls use the CDMA network. When that happens, you don't get simultaneous voice and data.
