How do I make key taps show up on on-screen keyboard?

A family member just upgraded from an iPad 3 > iPad Air 2. Both are running iOS 8.1.3 but on iPad Air 2, we noticed that when a key is pressed on the onscreen keyboard, it doesn't visually indicate when the key is being tapped Normally on iPad, a key will become a darker gray color to indicate it is being tapped, or on iPhone the keys pop up.

I couldn't find anything that seemed relevant in Settings>General>Keyboard. This is all with the stock Apple on-screen keyboard, no 3rd party keyboards are installed. I've attached a screenshot from my iPad Mini's keyboard demonstrating what I'm talking about (the desired result).

Does anyone know how to enable this function again? Any help is greatly appreciated.

On my iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1.3 the keys do change color when pressed.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?

Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). No data will be lost.

Hi Jim,

Yes, I tried rebooting the iPad several times as well as a reset using the home + power buttons as you described.

So it looks like this is a bug as opposed to an option you can turn on/off? Can anyone confirm this? A friend of mine (not particularly tech-savy) who has an iPad Mini 2 said they actually turned off this function in the past on their iPad Mini 2, but doesn't remember how they did it. It's possible they're mistaken, but that's why I assumed it was a preference that could be toggled.

I haven't done a complete restore again (just the once to transfer the data from iPad 3's backup) but I'd rather that be a last resort.
