How long should I charge my new 5c foe before its first time use, or can I just use it straight away

Most new devices with Lithium-ion batteries come partially charged but it's advisable to get a full charge into it before using it. Just charge it until it shows fully charged - this may take a few hours.
After that just charge it as required. Don't ever fully discharge it if you can avoid it as it's not good for the battery. You can't overcharge it by leaving it on the charger, though you shouldn't do so permanently (though that would rather defeat the object of having a mobile). It won't reach its full charge ability until you've charged it three or four times.
