Q: Mac Pro (late 2013) Graphic Issues

Hi everyone

I own a Mac Pro from late 2013 and occasionally run into graphic problems. I work on a dual monitor setup, mostly drawing CAD. At times my monitors freeze while background processes continue to run (music etc.). At times I still manage to control the interface, but it's very sluggish. When I open activity monitor I can see that there aren't any processes that could slow down my mac as much, so I'm quite confident, that the graphics card is at fault (also because sometimes my mac even tells me "there was a graphics card problem"). Problem is when I run the hardware check everything seems to be in order.

This is really frustrating and I'm unsure what to do about this. Does anyone else have problems with this?

Kind regards

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Starting with Yosemite I too got a lot of A Graphics Problem has been Detected messages. However, since upgrading to 10.10.2 I have not received any messages. Also that OSX version updated the firmware on the Mac Pro

... which according to the page you linked is up to date. I'm a bit clueless to be honest.

Not infrequently some of the Apple articles have not yet been updated.

I noticed that "the firmware Article" appeared to be out of date. But I was more concerned that a search for an actual stand-alone Firmware update 'after what they are calling (.B04) 2.0' did not seem to exist.

Yet we have Mac Pro cylinder users wailing that their graphics cards are not producing adequate results.

same here, new Mac pro with Yosemite 10.10.2

got the graphic card alerts + freezing + safari stop work..

after contacting applecare support ..erasing and reinstalling the system seems to run ok the machine solve some of the issues, but still it freezes while background processes continue to run..(the wheel spin) or not?! only A restart will let me move on ..

this is happening a few times a day.. even now while trying to write this post.

not even running hard app work stuff.. only some web browsing.. or pics viewing

    this is beyond annoying..

Just out of curiosity, do you have the stand-alone flash player installed?

I was having some issues with a flash-based screen saver. I was getting occasional "A Graphics Problem has been Detected" messages.

I disabled the screen saver and uninstalled flash completely.

The messages are now gone. I am on 10.10.2.

I am using google Chrome when I need to see flash in the browser, Safari for all other uses.

Maybe unrelated to your issue, but maybe worth a shot.

not here.. never installed any stand alone flash player..  (using the OS X screen saver)

the "graphics problem alerts" gone after reinstalling .. only the freezing (spinning wheel) occasionally visits

FYI, I believe that last EFI firmware update was solely for dealing with the "Thunderstrike" vulnerability in Thunderbolt and it didn't fix anything else.  There's still plenty of other things that need an EFI firmware update.  The current EFI doesn't even support new 4K SST displays, so you don't see anything until Yosemite finishes loading it's graphics driver at the login screen.

ok, the graphics issues continue as described. also I now have a new issue.

my mac pro beeps from time to time. just one random medium pitched beep.

I have my headphones plugged in. but the beep comes from the hardware...

    what could that be now?

I'm not sure if this is related or not.  A client of mine is using a MacPro (Late 2013 - 32GB RAM - 6 Core) with a Samsung 4K display.  The problem began recently in Mail, he get's the spinning beach ball constantly, making Mail useless.  Only Mail is affected and I have gone thru all the Mail fixes (rebuilding, reindexing, recreating account, creating new user account, etc...) to no avail.  If I log in with TeamViewer, the problem instantly corrects and no issues as long as I stay connected. Once I log out, spinning beach ball.  No processes in Activity Monitor or TOP indicate anything running amok.  Since the problem seems to go away with TeamViewer (not VNC or ARD though) I assumed it might be display related.  After some experimentation, changing the display resolution to another setting and back again fixes it for a bit.  I assume it's a problem with the graphics adapter working with the 4K display but am wondering if others have seen this or know of a possible fix?  I've seen posts about the Mac Pro's 4K problems with certain displays but not this specific issue.

    hi!

I'm glad you replied to my post. I noticed essentially the same thing: If I turn off my displays and turn

them on again the graphic cards are kind of being reset and the problem vanishes again.

so I'm really certain it's about the graphics cards. I have no clue what to do about it, though. I hope

    apple reads this?
