Q: Unable to make outgoing calls from Yosemite

My MacBook Pro mid-2010 running 10.10.2 has been able to receive phone calls via Continuity and my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1.3. Today, for the first time, I tried to make an outgoing call from my computer, but wasn't able to.

I verified that both devices met the system requirements for outgoing phone calls. I then walked through each of Apple's troubleshooting steps, verifying that, yes, all my settings were correct. The last bullet says to log out and back in to iCloud, so I did. Upon logging back in, however, FaceTime no longer shows the option to  turn on iPhone Cellular Calls—that option has totally disappeared from FaceTime > Preferences. And now, not only can I not making outgoing calls from my MacBook Pro, but I can't accept incoming ones either. I rebooted, but that didn't help.

Any idea how I can get this function working? Thanks!

Same as before. Checkboxes still don't appear.

Apple reps basically brought up the same suggestions as here: log in and back out of iCloud, make sure they are on the same WiFi, reset network settings on the phone. The senior advisor I spoke with last suggested logging into my wife's iCloud accounts on the computer and iPhone to see if the problems were specific to my iCloud account or the devices. At that point it just seemed too time consuming to keep grasping.

Are you running OSX 10.10.3 pre-release beta? If so, not supposed to discuss it here, but that is a "known" issue. Try rebooting your computer until "make cellular calls" is checked on. It may take several reboots. I only have this issue on a Mac mini, my Macbook Pro is fine.

Nope. I'm running 10.10.2. The problem's gone on for longer than a month, during which I've probably rebooted a dozen times. Glad to hear it's a known issue in the 10.10.3 pre-release beta—hopefully whatever Apple does to fix it for that release will address my problems as well. Thanks for the response!

    Problem solved.

After upgrading to 10.10.3 and logging in, I was prompted for my iCloud password. Of late, I'd enter it, and then get asked about seven more times to enter it. Today though when I entered it the first time, I was them prompted to created an app-specific password for iMessages and FaceTime. I did that, used the new password to login, and then noticed the iPhone Cellular Calls option repaired on both my Mac and iPhone (which I had earlier upgraded to iOS 8.3).

    Zach,

Mine disappeared within the last few days.  I have tried several times logging in and out - and doesn't help.

Can you think of anything else you may have done to fix the problem?

Sorry to hear it slackyhacky. Unfortunately I think I mentioned everything I did in this thread.

That's exactly what I experienced, and the requirement for an "application specific password" is a consequence of having elected two-step Apple ID verification. It's disappointing that you spent an hour and a half of your time with Apple Support and they didn't seem to know about it.

Apple does not make it clear which of the seven prompts for your password require your Apple ID password or your app-specific password. The dialog is the same either way. I counted nine prompts before they subsided, manually typing my ultra-secure mixed-case combination impossible to memorize Apple ID password each time. That's unreasonable.

Two-step verification is becoming commonplace but Apple's implementation of it is cumbersome, at best. I already complained to Apple about it and I suggest you do the same: http://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html

I was able to resolve this by resetting the network settings on my iPhone. You need to make sure that once you do that you re-join your wifi network.
