iphone 4s update to iOS

I've had my iPhone 4s laying around and it hasn't been updated to the iOS system at all, it's currently in version 4.3 When I plug it into the computer iTunes isn't recognizing it and I can't seem to be able to update it to the current operating system. Any ideas as to how I can do that?

You'll need to use iTunes in order to update the phone - you won't be able to do the update on the phone itself.

What operating system does you computer have?

iTunes wasn't able to even find the phone, it wasn't showing me any details or saying anything about it. I have Windows 8.1 and an updated version of iTunes
