iLife '11 Installation Failure

Am retiring my old 24" iMac (late 2006 build, 3 GB RAM, 250 G Hard drive) which came with OS 10.4, and was later upgraded to 10.6 + iLife'11, and iWork '11 (w/disks purchased at Apple). Later still got an on-line upgrade to OS 10.7.x It's been running flawlessly for the past several years, but cannot go beyond Lion.

Now, in preparation for giving it to a younger friend, I have wiped the hard drive, and reinstalled Snow Leopard (10.6) with the purchased disk. While the reinstalled 10.6 (with subsequent software update to 10.6.4) seems to be fully functional, and the later iWork '11 installation was successful, when we try to install the iLife '11 we repeatedly get an "Installation Failed" message almost immediately.

In Applications Folder, there is NO apparent iPhoto, iMovie, or Garage Band (which are the three main programs that my young friend wants to be able to use.

Should I have tried to install the original OS 10.4, then the 10.6?

Should I try to reinstall the 10.6?

Thanks for any possible suggestions.

P.S. I truly love my new 27" Retina-display iMac

Reinstall SL and update it to 10.6.8. Then try installing iLife '11.
