10.9.5 mac mail freezes up

I recently updated my mid-2012 Macbook Air to OSX 10.9.5 and when I open my Mac Mail app, no new mail comes in and the app quickly freezes. It also keeps me from accessing the dock. I have to command+option+esc and force quit in order to resume normal use of my computer. Has this happened to anybody else? Can anybody offer a solution? If I don't solve this soon I will resort to restoring my computer from the last update prior to my last OSX upgrade.

Do a backup.

Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

Looks like I spoke to soon. My Mail has been working properly for most of the day. Now when I access my Mail app messages do not show up in my mailboxes and eventually the application freezes up... pretty much the same problem I originally had. I tried what you said and it didn't seem to help. Is there something else you recommend?
