Help! Ive lost 3,000 photos! Ever since upgrading to OSX on IMAC

I've noticed little glitches with Iphoto since updating my IMAC and Macbook to OSX. For instance, the program jamming up, extremely slow response, suddenly closing out entirely, playing hide and seek with photos (they download, and then cannot be retrieved when searched for by file name), and recently, something completely unforgivable, deleting my photos. It seems that some of them, a meager 1,000(which includes 4 copies of each photo recovered) of my original 3,000 downloaded have been retrieved. Of course I deleted the originals from the source (Iphone 5).

Is there a fix for this bug? Seems to be somewhat common. Is it possible to retrieve any more photos? Does Iphoto have a storage capacity limit to be able to operate smoothly?

This happens mostly on the IMAC, but also noticing it on the Macbook, as far as photos downloading, then not able to be found. I tried to re-download (this time SD card), thinking there was a problem with the initial download and the photos claim to have been downloaded, but do not appear in any event.

This is so frustrating. I've been trying to complete a calendar for 3 months now, because my photos keep disappearing! I'm ready to switch to Microsoft.

Please help!

Sorry you need to calm down and provide coherent, revelent facts - and since we are all volunteer users just like you threatening us has no positive effect

Lets start with the version of iphoto and of the OS that you have and what you upgraded from (note OS X has been around for over ten years - if you just upgraded from OS 9 to OS X then you did not perviously have iphoto on your Mac)

Try again with no editorial comments and a clear description of what you have and what your problem is

Calm here.

What further information do you need? The name of my first born child? (Joking)

I assumed that since I entered the model and operating system info on my inquiry, that you could see that. I guess it only appears on my end of the inquiry.

So Macbook, we're talking OS X 10.6.8, Iphoto 9.2.3 and for the guiltiest culprit... Imac OS X Yosemite, Iphoto 9.6. Any other information needed? I'm obviously not very versed in computers, but I think I provided pretty much everything else in my original inquiry.

Let me know if I missed something. (Other than my photos)

Does Iphoto have a limit to how many photos it can hold while operating smoothly? Or is it simply restricted by the memory available on my computer? I'm wondering if this is the issue with the Imac, even though I've experienced similar problems on both systems.

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

iPhoto has a limit of 1,000,000 items. You should always have about 10 gigs of free space on your Hard Disk

Regards

IMac: This machine is so sluggish and programs frequently abruptly quit on me. IPhoto is the worst. It started after several updates to the OS. She worked fine before on her dinosaur software. :/ Could it all be due to insufficient memory? What is the best way expand the memory? Thanks!

Your Macbook Pro:

First reboot. You've been up over 12 days and a reboot can clear caches and temp files.

You're getting a lot of Page-outs (1.30 GB) which indicates you don't have enough memory. That model can use up to 16 GB of memory. Crucial.com is the best supplier to get Mac memory. I would upgrade to a minimum of 8 GB (two 2 GB modules) or more if the budget allows.

You iMac:

Also you shouldn't need the Seagate software to use the Seagate external HD. It just gets in the way of the OS X.

Do you have File Vault encryption activated?

Memory - 2 GB is just not enough memory to run Yosemite and any other app efficiently. The iMac is capable of using 6 GB of memory. Upgrade at Crucial.com to 6 GB with a 4 GB and a 2 GB module.

Since I updated to Yosemite and updated iPhoto I can find pictures under my events or iPhoto if looking but some of my files are more hidden as they are under other files. When I go to iPhoto from Facebook or from my email box looking for a picture, I pick photos and then I get iPhoto pictures to select but it now does NOT have my selection of files. I may have 50 files of pictures now labels as logos', friends, family, NEDSCO etc. Without the files I can't find the picture I want, and if it was there it may take me an hour to find it. I did find the tag files but I have not tagged my pictures so only a select few are tagged under these files. I'm so upset as I can't find the pictures I want when I need to find them. I went through all pictures at one time and not all are there... for sure. Yet I know they are there as I can go direct to iPhoto move the picture to my desk to find it when I want it. But this is extra work.

Feb 26, 2015 4:13 PM in response to carrledlane

I'm like you in having this problem since the update. I use my photos more than anything on my computer so this is a major problem. I can even do my job with this problem.... I use these pictures in my advertisements. I want to undo updates to go back to the way things were now. I'm asking myself why I am having to tag everything new now too??? I don't know how to tag old pictures either if I go directly to iPhoto. I am naming them on my desk top... but many of my pics have numbers given by iPhoto,

Help! Ive lost 3,000 photos! Ever since upgrading to OSX on IMAC
