Headphones Crackling

I've had the Apple EarPods that came with my phone for awhile now and the left side crackles. Happens, I know, but the weird thing is that I don't get crackling if it is near or at the highest volume. Any idea what could be causing it? And any way of fixing them or am I throwing them out for the spares? Thanks.
