Q: iCloud keychain empty

My iCloud keychain used to work in Safari, but a few weeks ago it stopped working. I can't remember in what context that happened, perhaps a software upgrade.

If I type into a password field, a little window pops up and suggests a password for the iCloud keychain, if I select that, it still is not stored, when I look at Safari -> Preferences -> Passwords. That list is empty.

I've tried everything: repairing the keychain, switching it off and on again. I have 3 other devices where the keychain works perfectly: an iMac, an iPhone and an iPad. I just installed a new iPhone and it fetched the keychain perfectly when I activated it. It's only my MacBook where it doesn't work.

I've Googled a lot to solve this problem. I've seen advice to switch off the keychain on all your devices, I am reluctant to do that, because I fear it will be lost on all of them.

I'd appreciate suggestions on how to solve this annoying problem! Thanks!
