How to delete files in my macbook air startup drive

I keep on getting an error message that my startup disk is full and that before I can update any program I have to delete some files. I have already backed up the contents of my computer into an external hard drive and now want to know how to delete files from my startup disk as i don't know how to do this. My system is a MacBook Air 13 inch early 2014 edition; Serial No. C02NDFPNG086. OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.

Grateful,

Ayo Phillips
