App folder size and app HD size not the same

Sizes of the apps are not the same.

I checked the folder of the applications and it says that it only takes up 20gb

However, in the storage under the 'about mac', it says my apps are taking up 94gb but still have 72gb free

what is happening??

Reindex Spotlight.

Spotlight reindexing will take a while to finish.

System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

You will see a new category “Other” in the Storage Display.

About “Other”:

Note:

If you don’t have Macintosh HD icon on the desktop,

Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop:

Enable “Hard disks”.

Hello dominic23,

My Macintosh HD on my desktop states that I have 88 GB avail. from 159 GB HD.

OSx utility, omnidisksweeper and istat pro widget all say that I only have 33 GB avail.

I used omnidisksweeper yesterday to clear items taking up room.

Omnidisksweeper just swept my HD and states I am only using 64.5 GB

I am confused with this discrepancy.

Please help.

They will be deleted as required. From the 2nd linked article.

To make sure that you have storage space when you need it, Time Machine creates and retains local snapshots only when there is plenty of free space on your startup drive:

  • If less than 20% of the total storage space on your startup drive is available, Time Machine removes local snapshots, starting with the oldest, until you have more than 20% free space.
  • If less than 10% or less than 5GB of storage space is available, Time Machine removes local snapshots more quickly. When only one snapshot remains, Time Machine stops creating new snapshots. As free space increases, Time Machine at first replaces the previous snapshot with a new one, then eventually resumes creating snapshots as normal.

Hello Eric,

Not sure what happened, but the 54 GB of backup storage went away and has now freed all the HD space.

I now have 86 GB of HD space available.

Istat pro, Omnidisksweeper, and the actual HD all match noting 87 GB of HD available.

My mobile backups drive is completely full showing 159GB.

Is there a way to clear that drive or folder?

Thank you for your help thus far, it is much appreciated.
