Password Protected .dmg File

How secure is a password on a .dmg file? Is this a good way to password protect my sensitive files or is it easily hacked?

Intel imac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Cracking a 128 or 256 bit AES file is darn near impossible. With a good password, that is. Something long and random, like:

DRNtpc0dkjpz2SIJlYmHT8wQ

Cracking it would be pretty simple if you use something like your birthday, your pet's name, or anything related to personal information someone else may already know, or be able to guess. The shorter it is, the less time it would take for software to try every possible combination.
