I need to record a 30 minute audio talk, put it in a file, and send it as an email attachment.
First, is this possible? If so, what steps do I need to take to do it?

you are asking in the bootcamp forum which is about running windows on macs so it's unclear if you mean under windows on a mac or you are just posting in the wrong forum
On the OSX side, you can use QuickTime - QuickTime Player 10.x: Record video or audio.
If you are using Windows/Bootcamp, please see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/record-audio-with-sound-recorder.
These can be big files, and email may have a size restriction. You may want to consider DropBox or a similar service to send the file.

I couldn't find any forum which seem right for my question - I thought "bootcamp" meant that it was dealing with the basics!
The choice of the name Bootcamp was considered a derogatory moniker for Windows by Apple Engineers, since it is very 'basic'. 😉
