iTunes crash on launch, Windows Vista

I'm using iTunes 12.1.1.4, just recently updated. When I did update, it now crashes on launch every time.

I am using Windows Vista fully updated.

The error I get is:

Unhandled exception at 0x000007fee6b1a332 in iTunes.exe: 0xC000001D: Illegal Instruction.

When I run it in the debugger, the illegal instruction is:

000007FEE6B1A332 db c4h

When I look at the back trace it shows:

CoreAudioToolbox.dll!000007fee586a332()

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try theiTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Thanks for that extensive page. I didn't see my specific issue, but...

Reverting to an older version of any of the 12 series did not solve the issue.

BUT! Reverting to version 11 solved the issue.

Something happened with Windows Vista its updates and iTunes 12+.

I'm still interested if anyone else has seen this particular problem. This reversion is more of a bandaid than a solution since I won't be able to update to a later version of iTunes. Smoothly at least.

You're welcome. 🙂

Missing from my post above was this initial piece of advice regarding the CoreAudioToolbox.dll error messages.

Such errors can usually be fixed by deleting the offending dll, then repairing the component it is part of from the programs and features control panel. CoreAudioToolbox.dll is part of Apple Application Support and can normally be found in

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support or

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support.
