HI Allan, Bitdefender Virus Checker. My mac is a 2007 era Intel which since i upgraded to Yosemite has had an intermittent problem with "freezing" but it has always re started ok (The Apple tech people in the end put that down to the age of my mac, I had already increased the RAM to is max) It has been like that for a few months then this week after a "freeze" it would not boot up. After doing the recovery and all the other apple guideline checks it works but then the problem happens again, three times this week, I have recovered it each time.

sorry for my un technical style and for loading the further info on you

Ta, John

That is not the correct way to uninstall BitDefender.

The correct method is

To remove Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, follow these steps:

1. Open a Finder window and go to the Applications folder.

2. Select the Bitdefender folder.

3. Double-click the application Bitdefender for Mac Uninstaller to open it.

4. Follow the uninstalling steps to complete the process, then click Close to finish.

After what you just did there is every chance that in order to clean up the mess you made you are going to have to reinstall it once and again and then follow the direction this time to remove correctly.

Also that latest EtreCheck report that is unformatted in worthless. It is impossible to read.

Where did you get BitDefender from? If you got it from the App Store, it's normal that there won't be an uninstaller, and in that case, you can just drag it to the trash. (It also wouldn't be causing this particular problem if you have the App Store version, though.) If you got it from somewhere else, you will need the uninstaller. That uninstaller will also probably be on the disk image you downloaded, which contains the installer.

Also, have you ever replaced the hard drive in that machine? If so, when did that happen? One good possibility for this kind of behavior would be a failing hard drive. If you have never replaced the hard drive in that computer, I'd say that's a strong possibility, as it would be remarkable for the original drive in a 2007 machine to still be functional.

Finally, please re-post the EtreCheck report. I'm not sure what you did that stripped out all the line breaks, but whatever it was, don't do it again! Just paste the report directly from EtreCheck into a reply here.
