Q: cannot delete or hide apps in itunes

I cannot delete or hide apps in iTunes. iTunes is open I've gone to the store and selected purchased, then select apps. Once I'm on that page I cannot select any apps to delete or hide. I've tried switching to the apps for iPhone and iPad as well as the ones "not in my library" and "All". apps do not respond.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Reporting that the hovering does not produce an "X" for me either.  I'm using Yosemite on an iMac, everything fully updated.

Clicking on the top left corner should still hide the app though, it's that the 'x' is invisible.

That was working for me, but then for some reason, it stopped.  Instead, when I click the "invisible X", the app icon disappears and the apps reorganize themselves!  Kooky! And then if I change the sorting from "recent" to "by name", the disappeared app icons are back again.

I've just tried it again and on the first attempt the apps flickered and switching to iPad apps and back to iPhone apps caused it to reappear. But on the second attempt it remained hidden, and closing and re-opening iTunes didn't cause it to reappear

click on the 3dots under "Control", click on apps.

You can select the unwanted apps then right click to delete.

Thank you for figuring this out so now at least in itunes the mess is gone.  I literally had 15 years of junk I think.  All the way back to my first gen ipod touch.

    You made my day!!!!!!

This works in OS 10.7.5 using iTunes 12.

Go to the Apps list (showing either the list or the apps’ icons. Control-click each icon you want to delete. To remove it permanently, move it to trash. Remember to empty the trash when done.

The Apps list is available by selecting the three dots, then drag down to apps.

Wow, an invisible "x." This worked for me on iTunes 12.2.  Thank you.

Thank you so SO SOOOOOOOO much for this advice! I was obsessing for way too long about how to delete apps. I couldn't figure out. Kinda cruel on behalf of Apple to make the 'X' invisible.

    Thanks!

This has been bugging the crap out of me for months.

I know that Apple don't really listen to the customer base, but at least Google let you actually delete apps completely on Android.  Here's hoping Apple will do something.... eventually.

    Once again thanks.

These instructions are confusing ... but I cobbled them together.

    1) You delete apps on the iOS device itself by pressing/holding any icon until you get the X's ... you can only delete them one-by-one.

    2) You delete apps on iTunes, multiple at a time if you like by:

    • clicking the 'Apps' icon ... after the Music, Movies, and TV Shows icons. (Apps is also listed in the three-dots 'more' icon, the next one to the right.)

    • selecting apps...multiple by pressing the Command key, and then Control-click (or right-click) to display a 'contextual menu' with Delete.

*You cannot delete apps in the list view displayed when you click the iPhone/iPad icon when the device is plugged in ... you can delete them from the device itself. To delete from iTunes you click the three dots and go from there.

I Am concerned with APP STORE purchases from FIVE YEARS AGO and DELETED showing up on my son's RESTRICTED iPad since we use Family Sharing. I have attempted to "Hide" the apps by going to:

App Store > My Purchases > My Name > All and Not on this iPhone/iPad

as soon as I swipe them, they go away. I go back to the list and they are there. The HIDE function is malfunctioning. To make matters worse, these APPS are easily visible by my son and he has the ability to download them circumventing the "Ask to Buy" function.

I Get that Apple refuses to allow you to delete your app history and "hide" is their recommendation. But "Hide" doesn't work. I'm trying to keep a seven year old safe from the world but cant keep inappropriate content thats on the Organizer's iphone/ipad away from him. Please help!
