Ringtone starts normally then distorts and fades out on iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1.2) with earbuds in, without the earbuds the ringtone is fine. The problem started in late January.

Did you check if there is any debris or lint inside the earphone port? Can you listen to music without having the same effect?
Are other notification tones working when the earphones are plugged in?
Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting.
