New hard drive. what next?

I replaced the failed drive in my 2009 iMac. Now when I start up I get the flashingfolder with the question mark.

I have tried:

- starting and holding down the C key with the OS 10.5.4 disk that came with the machine. The machine spins and stops a few times then spits it out. Then flashing folder/question mark

- starting holding the option key to bring up the recovery disk, the doesn'twork either.

WHat could be happening here? The new drive install was clean, lots of other folks on Amazon have installed this drive into similar machines without problems.

What CD do you have in the SuperDrive?

The folder with the '?' is because the drive cannot find an OS to boot up with. And, the new drive needs to be formatted for Mac first. If the original install disk does not work, do you have another Mac or external clone to boot up with? If yours came with 10.5.x, I doubt that recovery would work.
