So my brother's boss upgraded his home entertainment center and had no use for his 1st gen apple tv's, so I was lucky enough to get one. However it doesn't have the power cord or remote. Should I sell it to Amazon or will apple give me a credit for it towards a new apple tv 3rd gen?

Apple does not do trade ins; however some online resellers do. Not sure how much a 1st gen Apple TV would be worth, but you can check ebay.
There are very easy ways to "trade in" many Apple Products for an Apple Store Gift Card - http://store.apple.com/us/browse/reuse_and_recycle - I cannot find a way to trade in an Apple TV via that portion of the website though. Although there does not appear to be a way to get credit or Gift Card, you may find that the Free Recycling Program will take it (keep it out of the landfill).

I am sure I would not pay much on eBay or Amazon for a device that has no power cord or remote. Probably not much for a 1st Gen with them. Shipping would cost more than the device, methinks.

FYI, Apple does not administer that program and there are plenty of complaints here about the inadequacies of the company being used (very slow process, amount realized is less than originally mentioned, etc). Personally, I would not recommend that program.

IF you are talking about the "Trade-in" [my term] program, I am aware that the "Gift Card" program has been subject of many complaints - UK program too.
I did not recommend that. I merely cited the existence thereof to give context to the rest of my post. In fact, I said:

If you are referring to the "Re-Cycle for Free" program, I just linked directly to the page, as it was a little convoluted to find via the http://store.apple.com/us/browse/reuse_and_recycle page (No AppleTV choice!).
But the Recycler will take darn near anything – Free.

PS: We have now spent FAR more time on this subject than the value of the OP's AppleTV Gen1 (one has to put a $ value on one's time).
I think it would make a nice coaster or paperweight.
Conversion to the traditional Fish Bowl doesn't look like it would work out as well as other Mac models I've seen.
