iphoto library missing

I was starting my i7 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro from scratch (thanks to the crash to login error) and importing my photos from the old HD. The moment I finished doing this (maybe 5k+ photos), iPhoto stopped showing the images. I made a huge mistake and closed it. When I started again, surprise: I had no iPhoto library. I went hunting for it, and found it where it should be, but it had transformed from a "iPhoto library"-kind of "file" to a regular folder.

Anyone has ever experienced this? What can I do to save the work of importing and organize (again!) all my photos?

Thanks,

Quickest solution will be to restore your backup from just before this happened
