Moving data to iCloud

Hi,

I'm new to the Mac world....so here's a simple question:

I want to clear up space on my mac by moving heavy photo files to iCloud Drive. Once saved on iCloud Drive the files still remain on my mac. How do I make sure they're removed from mac and safely stored on iCloud? Can I just delete the files from my drive?
